EL MILAGRO DE TEOFILO

--------------------------------------------------------------------This is the Miracle of Theophilus from the Miraglos de Nuestra Señora by Gonzalo de Berceo, Spain's first named poet, probably before 1250. There are many editions. I have followed that of Thomas Antonio Sanchez, Colección de poesías castellanas, vol. 2 (Madrid, 1780), on which the others are based for the most part. Other well-known editions are by Florencio Janer, vol. 57 of the Biblioteca de Autores Españoles (Madrid: Real Academia, 1952), 103-31 (follows Sánchez), A. García Solalinde. Clásicos Castellanos (Madrid, 1958) and Brian Dutton, Gonzalo de Berceo, Obras completas, II, Los Milagros de Nuestra Señora (London: Tamesis, 1971) (uses conjectural criticism). This is not so much a translation as a `gist of the line' retelling. The bibliography on Berceo is quite large. It can be controlled in part through the estándar bibliography: José Simón Diaz, Bibliografía de la literatura hispanica, vol. III, vol. 1 (Madrid: Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas, 1963), 82-98, through the journal Berceo and the bibliographies in the various editions. For those who do not know Berceo at all, there is a short introduction by John E. Keller, Gonzalo de Berceo. Twayne's ...
